Models Who Defined the 2010s

We are 4 months into a new decade, so I think it is fitting we reflect on the last decade and in true SGF style, discuss the models who we think defined the 2010s.

The 1990s (sometimes referred to as the Official Era of the Supermodel or the Heroin Chic Era) was defined by Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer, and Linda Evangelista. The 2000s gave us some of our SGF faves: Gemma Ward, Natalia V, Vlada, Anna Selezneva, Sasha P to name a few)...

Which models do you think defined the 2010s?

And who were your personal favourite models of the 2010s?

One of my personal favorites of the '10s is/was (I know it's 2020 now) Steinberg. She is gorgeous with both short and long hair, but her more recent short hair makes her even more unique because it makes her face appear more angular and androgynous, pairing well with menswear and contrasting well with delicate fabrics. She is definitely one of the thinner models of the past decade from what I've seen. She's walked in nearly every Spring/Summer 2020 show I've read about, which is one of the reasons I feel she would be appropriate for this thread, but she didn't walk in Alexander McQueen which makes me so sad because there were so many structured pieces that I think she would have looked great in. She also has a great late '10s masculine off-duty style.

As well as looking good in tailored fashion and menswear, she can also pull off ruffles and gauzy fabrics:

@Cherrygloss Sofia Steinberg didn't start modelling until 2018 (correct me if I am wrong) so I wouldn't really categorise her as a model who has "defined" the 2010s.

Models that spring to mind for me are:

Mica Arganaraz - modelling since 2012 and still in demand 8 years later. Prada muse. Been on the cover of Vogue in like 10 countries

Abbey Lee Kershaw (I may be a bit biased, but I love her and she is one of my favourite models of all time)

Lexi Boling - been modelling since 2013, has graced numerous Vogue covers and walked 52 shows in SS15 fashion season!

Karlie Kloss of course - achieved both HF and commercial success and while I am not a fan of her now, I personally think she was fantastic in her prime. Some would even argue she's possibly THE most successful model of the 2010s.

Julia Nobis (she's also studying medicine )

Sofia Steinberg didn't start modelling until 2018 (correct me if I am wrong) so I wouldn't really categorise her as a top model of the 2010s

You're right, sorry, I only developed a serious interest in runway fashion a few years ago so I probably only remember as far back as 2018. Pay no attention to my goldfish brain

I’m interpreting this thread more as models who defined the 2010’s for me, even if they may not necessarily have been the most recognisable or well-known models.

Marine Deeleuw:

Worked pretty consistently until the mid 2010’s, and still works here and there.

Zhenya Katava:

Zhenya started modelling seriously in 2011 if I’m not mistaken, and is one of the most memorable and stunning faces of the 2010’s imo.

Nastya Kusakina:

She also started in 2011, and modelled pretty consistently throughout the 2010’s.

Ondria Hardin:

Some of her earliest work was in 2010, and she modelled consistently until around 2018 if I’m not mistaken.

And of course, the lovely Sasha Luss and Abbey Lee as mentioned by @Tinyportia

Intended to be both - which models defined the decade for you personally. And which models do you think objectively had an impact. As to the latter, a few controversial models certainly come to mind! Btw, great additions @lattelover ! I’d totally forgotten all about Zenyha and Nastya! You make me want to create a version of this thread for every decade lol

I think the top ten most influential models of the 2010s (in no particular order) would have to be:

Kiki Willems

Adut Akech
(Not one of my favourites but she has been quite successful over the past decade)

Kaia Gerber
(Sure, she established her career because of nepotism but she has so much more talent that other nepotism models e.g. Kendull Jenner)

Anok Yai

Lexi Boling

Karlie Kloss
(I agree with Tinyportia that she was great in her prime but not so much as of lately)

Here's my take!
Number 1: has to be Karlie Kloss (although as others have mentioned before she is far from her prime now).

Number 2: Lara Stone. The gap-toothed smile! I think there was even an article in Vogue back in the day about how gap-toothed smiles were becoming especially trendy. Personally, I think she's not quite SG-skinny.

Number 3: Liu Wen. The first Asian model to be mentioned on Forbes' highest-paid model list.

Number 4: Kaia Gerber. Started more in 2017 though...

Number 5: Anna Ewers.

Dishonourable mentions: Kendull Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid...

One of the best models of the '10's if you ask me.

I have my personal favorites, the Saint Laurent Girl Gang, and I think in a way they defined the models of 2010. I.e, Grace Hartzel, Kiki Willems, Lili Sumner, Veronika Villim and Lida Fox. And I think in a way they defined the 2010s.

But I do think that the models that even more so defined the 2010s was Frejha Beha Erichson, Abby Lee Kershew, Julia Nobis, Hanne Gaby Odile, and Sasha Luss, because they were just everywhere all the time. And I'm sure I'm missing a few.

I know she's not popular here, but I don't think you can talk about models of the 2010s without mentioning Lindsey Wixson. Hugely polarising with hands down the worst teeth in fashion. Her first shoot was for Vogue Italia at just 15 years of age. Her runway debut was at the Spring 2010 New York Fashion Week and that same season she opened Prada's SS2010 show and closed for Miu Miu. Since then she's been everywhere. And who can forget her infamous runway falls (Versace SS12 is my fave).
