Paris Hilton

@longlegz at least smart enough to save herself from the embarrassment of sharing catwalks with Gisele, Natalia, Vlada, etc., because I'm sure she could have stayed a model for as long as she wanted to (just like Hadids.)

Disputable, she later (?, not sure how the timeline goes) got in that trashy, embarrassing show...

For someone who was as rich with as many resources as she has, I never understood her reason to do that farmer show with Nicole Richie.

Out of all the things she could have done with her wealth and family resources and connections, she decides to reinvent herself to become a dumb blonde and star in a reality show with not much to be revered about...

Like someone else mentioned later, she could have gotten into modeling and stayed for as long as she wanted as well (and thank Jesus she did not...) .

These particular choices are baffling. She could have just branded herself as a classy socialite and started her clothing/ perfume / whichever product line without the dumb blonde slut image.

Not everyone wants to be classy though. It’s just not an appealing image or lifestyle to some, especially those who grew up in a wealthy family or “high society” and have been pressured to act classy, mature, elegant, etc. at social functions since they were little kids. Paris also recently spoke about being sent to restrictive, abusive boarding schools for “troubled youth” during her childhood and teen years. Just like being a child star can fuck you up and delay/extend your teenage rebellion period well into your 20s (see Miley, Britney, Lindsay, etc etc etc,) growing up as part of high society influences how you want to brand yourself and break away from a restrictive image.

edit: Also let’s not ignore that this image was partially forced upon her by the leaked sex tape, during which she was under the influence and with an older man (I think she was 19 and he was mid 30s? Not age-gap shaming but she was definitely naive to think that it wouldn’t get leaked or sold.)

1) She was sent to those schools beacuse of her misbehaviour.
2) But she accepted to film those scenes. You can't agree to have a cock in your mouth and say "I didn't know what I was doing". The second (official) leak was with her consent and it was predicted that she'll get money for it. If she actually recieved the money remains unclear, she claims she didn't, some claim otherwise.
3) Sorry, it's hard to have compassion since she was the one that agreed to be in that reality show. Was it to rebel against her family? Sure. I'll still never understand the choice of playing dumb on TV. There are many women who rebelled against their parents, but didn't do it in public with being trashy. I just love how celebs choose tacky ways of making money and later complain. It's just laziness for me. There are many jobs in the world, but they willingly decide to embarrass themselves for money - because others jobs require education/training/experience/skills and acting dumb on TV doesn't.

Edit: often people don't own their past and embarrassing actions and claim they were persuaded. But let's please keep in mind that there's a choice to say "yes" or "no". Claiming it was always somebody else looks like simply shifting the blame and not owning what you did. Also, I do not think young people are unaware of what they do, it's more that they realise only later on how shameful it was.

And now she’s decided she’s had enough of that image and claims her voice was fake the entire time and is actually deep and manly.
Everything she’s done sounds quite unstable and psychotic to me. From the trashy image, to bad reality shows and now to how everything was fake and for show.

I don't think she's ever complained about being on the Simple Life though? Admittedly I haven't followed her career that closely, but the revival of this thread piqued my interest. She's given a few interviews recently where she said that even though people assumed she was as dumb in real life as she came across in the show, she was glad she did that show:

"I was having fun with it. I think, you know, I was in on the joke. People thought that’s who I really was, so sometimes it is annoying that people assume that I am kind of that, you know, blonde airhead that I was playing on the show. But I love, also, proving people wrong and any time they meet me in real life they’re always very surprised. So, it makes me happy to know that I created something that basically started an entire new generation of people.”

"At the same time, I built a huge brand off doing it. So, I don’t really regret it"
.

Depending on how you look at it, some would say it was actually a smart decision. Assuming her goal was international fame (I don't think anyone would argue that it wasn't), then the show helped her achieve exactly that. Before the Simple Life, all she was known for was being a socialite and heiress. As an Australian, I think I was only vaguely aware of who she was before the show. If it wasn't for The Simple Life, I doubt she'd still be in the public eye today. Personally, I'm glad she did The Simple Life. It was an entertaining show lol. Yes, it was a trashy show and yes she could've done something "better" with her life, but whatever, I don't judge her for it. And it seems like she was grateful for the experience (at least from what I've read) so props to her for that I guess. Also, as others have said, thank goodness she didn't give modelling a serious go lol.

everything she’s done sounds quite unstable and psychotic to me.

Uh, what? I am no Paris fan (and as mentioned I don't follow her very closely), but that sounds like a bit of a stretch. Fame hungry, a people pleaser and a bit desperate? Possibly. But unstable and psychotic? Feel free to try and change my mind though!

I kind of am a Paris fan so like, I'm biased, but these schools arent just like reform schools or military schools. These schools are abusive and no one should treat children the way they are. And look, i went to a school with nuns who hit me as punishment - this is not that. These schools are often touted as like a better version or alternative to juvie (which is another bundle of horrors).

Paris went to the Provo Canyon School in Utah and actually helped introduce a bill into Utah state legislature to stop this abuse in that state. I know in recent news, there's the Dozier school in FL, there a couple recently arrested in MO for sexually abusing girls, and it's not surprising when you've written off these kids as troubled teens who shouldn't be listened to. At best, I think these facilities can be thought of as adjacent to juvie. You can't solve troubled behvoir with abuse.

If we're calling anyone a psycho here, it's her parents who refused to do any actual parenting.

Edit: Sorry for always coming onto threads and being like a dumb sjw. Back on track, I really like Paris. I think she's fun and there's a lot of levity around her. I watched her entire doc, was stoked when the simple life came on amazon, and like that she's been decently skinny forever. I also like that she's done modest work on her face, but kept her most distinguishing features.

Fwiw, I don’t think you come across as a dumb sjw. I know I don’t always agree with your posts but you always have a very interesting perspective on things and I really enjoy your contributions. As for this particular post, I’d hardly call it a “social justice warrior” post. Anyway, thanks for sharing that info. I had no idea those schools were that bad.

Also, ngl, but the revival of this thread is making me want to rewatch The Simple Life

She knew that she was being filmed, and obviously wasn’t completely drugged up or passed out, but she’s stated that she thought she was just making a video with someone she loved at the time. I don’t think she ever expected it to be leaked for the world to see.

Anyway, the point of my post wasn’t really to frame Paris as a victim or someone we should feel bad for, just to explain how her past has shaped the image she’s chosen for herself.

Paris obviously has some mental health issues - she's a hoarder which is usually a sign of trauma in my book.

She has built an empire, and has been able to evolve her image. Nothing ventured nothing gained - even if she fell flat doing it and embarrassed herself. I respect her work ethic, and that she owns everything she does.

I get your point and I’m not saying she’s a victim but if mistakes I made at 19 were show cast to the world because I was born into a specific family I would still look back and regret it or feel sad even if I agreed to make a sex tape with my boyfriend at the time.
I just think this take is a little harsh - she’s 40 years old and feels like she made a mistake at 19, from what I know she isn’t claiming she was assaulted or something she just said she thought it wouldn’t be leaked. Even if she knew it would be leaked that was 21 years ago it’s normal to feel remorseful and be upset with your mistakes hers are just incredibly public.

Perhaps saying she is psychotic and unstable is a bit of a stretch, but there is definitely something about her previous public persona (ditsy blonde) that is unnerving and more than disingenuous that one can’t put a finger to.

To say she was faking her entire dumb blonde persona for two decades (as she claims in her documentary along with the how her voice was fake), well, I do not believe. I am sure she wasn’t already businesslike at 22 years old. There was a part of that that was a part of her, and it was an extension of who she already was.

She always came off as “out of it” in interviews with the sultry and slick smile and one slightly droopy eye. I haven’t watched enough of her to give a character analysis, but her personality in interviews was kind of creepy, disturbing and something you cannot pinpoint that is off. I would say it wasn’t even outwardly fake if that makes sense.

The need to embody the character of a dumb blonde (an extension of who she probably was already) for so many years to me indicates some degree of complexity in her character that is abnormal whether or not it is to fight back from her “abusive family” or to serve a deeper purpose for escape (hence the word “psychotic” which is probably not the right word here).

It is just convenient for her to say her entire persona was fake especially now that she is 40 years old and feels less of a need to “be a different personality”. I am sure now at her age, she indeed is more businesslike and probably wants to remove herself from her previous persona, but I don’t believe it was entirely fake just as how “real” her current serious, business-like persona is now.

Basically, to summarize, I think she enjoys maneuvering the attention of the public in ways that suits her current situation (or mental state) whether its the spotlight on her party girl slut image, or a business woman mature image. The need to hold such a control on how people view her, in my opinion, is abnormal and it means (possibly) that none of these public personas are actually real and that there is a true persona that will never be shown to us, similar to how narcissistic serial liars are.

PS: I know most people disagreed with my comment saying she is not attractive. Well... I still stand by that. She doesn't have a face of a model and she looks more like a celebrity or entertainer. There is nothing fresh and unique about her face that is inspiring, but I do give her props for being able to maintain a somewhat thin body throughout the years.

Hmmm I feel like it’s pretty unfair to say that she is a “narcissistic serial liar” based on the fact that she doesn’t want to be seen in her “party girl slut image” anymore. it’s pretty understandable for her to want to change that opinion people er in anyway that she can.

As we’ve all said, she created an entire empire on literally just being herself. Whether that was on purpose or not. if I had outgrown that whole facade and kept getting treated like I was that ditzy party girl, I’d go fucking crazy. So I don’t blame her for going the business mastermind route in order to shift the narrative around her perceived identity. I also don’t see the difference between what she’s doing, and an actor trying to break out of being type casted as a certain roll.

Also, one of my closest friends is, unfortunately, a narcissistic serial liar. They’re more likely to lie about the fact that they’re partially fluent in Swedish, or handmade the top they’re wearing that someone compliments, than a whole persona.
