I neither think of Terry Richardson as a creepy perverted fuck like some do, nor do I think he´s a genius phenomenon who does wonders with his camera like nobody else could. In fact, owning a famous name / infamous reputation, a prizey cam and some phantasy are the only things that seperates him from self entitled „professionals“.
His photos are spectacular and cause big controversy, which rightfully justify his current status as an artist and rebel.
He oversteps borders of taste, decendy and sometimes aesthetics.
And this is not only him being privileged and famous enough to exploit others using his fame and reputation to do whatever he pleases,- even his first steps into the world of professional photography showed explicit stuff and his affinition for such.
That´s my opinion about the man himself and his art in general - my opinion on models / celebs in generally working with him is totally different though.
Nobody´s forced to work or shoot with him generally.
There are at least a dozen photographers who are big and respected in the fashion industry as well a model can use as references.
TR is not a door-opener to HF fashion. Au contraire, I observed a lot of models getting shit for shooting with him (Miranda Kerr, anyone? only ONE of many examples.)
Everyone, may it be a model, singer or actress, knows by his reputation what she´s signing up for.
I do (and again, that´s just my personal opinion) think TR did benefit as much from directing Miley´s „wrecking ball“ video as she did. She did benefit from him as much as he did. No matter what she did or paid (I´m trying not to get into all that sexual favour rumors around), she was the one who got the headlines.
She chose to work with someone known to shoot / direct offensive stuff as she chose to turn her general image into being an offensive sl*t. She knew what she was doing.
That being said, I hate Miley. She´s a b*tch, but not a dumb one, but a diplomatic, calculating one.
